OFF-ICE TRAINING FOR HOCKEY PLAYERS

Develop speed, strength, power, and conditioning through structured training built around the athlete and the demands of the game.

Hockey Performance

What We Develop

Off-ice training should develop the physical qualities that support performance, not just make athletes tired.

Speed

Acceleration, max-velocity exposure and multidirectional movement.

Strength

Build the force-producing capacity that supports athletic performance.

Power

Develop the ability to produce and express force quickly.

Capacity

Prepare athletes to repeatedly perform and tolerate the demands of training and hockey.

The Aretel Approach

Training With A Reason Behind It.

Good programming is more than choosing good exercises. Training should be structured around the athlete, the qualities being developed and where they are in the training process.

01

Built Around The Athlete

Training decisions should reflect the athlete’s experience, goals, schedule, strengths, limitations and hockey demands.

02

Progressed With Purpose

Volume, intensity, exercise selection and training emphasis should evolve over time instead of staying the same all year.

03

Quality Before Quantity

Sprint fast. Jump explosively. Lift with intent. More work is not automatically better work.

Josh Van Unen

I’ve played hockey my whole life. I recently completed my fourth year of U Sports hockey and am now in my first season playing professionally in Europe. Alongside my playing experience, I have a degree in kinesiology and hold NASM certifications as a Certified Personal Trainer and Performance Enhancement Specialist.

I built Aretel Performance because off-ice training has become unnecessarily confusing for a lot of athletes. There are endless exercises, drills, workouts and opinions online, and it can be difficult to know what is actually worth doing and what is simply adding more work.

My goal with Aretel is to simplify that process and help athletes focus on the things that matter most. Training is built around the major physical qualities that support hockey performance, speed, strength, power and capacity, with exercises and progressions selected because they serve a clear purpose within the program.

Rather than chasing new exercises for the sake of variety, I want athletes to understand what they are training, why they are training it and how each part of the program fits into the bigger picture.
